Shipping containers can provide a cost-effective storage solution on your property or for your business. Not only are they inexpensive to rent, but they are also more convenient since they are delivered to and left at your site for as long as you need them.

1. Use Foundation Skids

Avoid setting storage containers directly on the ground. Water will pool beneath the container, increasing the chances of leaks and rust formation. At a bare minimum, put down wood foundation skids and level them well before placing the container on top. If you plan to stack containers for more storage and for more than a few weeks, then concrete foundation piers or a permanent poured foundation is a better option.

2. Watch for Defects

Certain defects must be avoided when renting a shipping container. First, make sure the container isn't racked, which means it is warped so it is no longer square and level. Stretch a rope from one end to the other and measure the distance from the wall to the rope along its length. If this distance isn't constant, then the container is warped and leaks are more likely to form. Plus, it is unsafe to stack or transport racked containers. Rust and other visible defects should also be avoided.

3. Install a Good Lock

Security must be considered when renting a shipping container for storage. Some containers can only be locked with a padlock or padlock and chain, while others have integrated locking systems that provide even more security. You may also want to use a security camera or alarm system on the container, depending on the value of the stored items and the theft risk in your area.

4. Consider Ventilation

Moisture and humidity can collect inside a shipping container, which will then lead to mold and rot problems with anything that is stored there. You can rent containers that include ventilation, which is designed to allow airflow through the shipping container without allowing moisture in. There are even options with included electric fans or dehumidifiers for areas where moisture is a major concern.

5. Check for Leaks

Leaks aren't always obvious, especially if you are looking at potential container rentals during dry weather. Fortunately, there's an easy way to check for water leaks, and this method works best when the sun is shining. Simply go into the container and close the door, making sure it doesn't latch completely. If you see any light coming through, then there are leaks. Corners and seams are the locations to inspect most closely.
